Kairos WWT receives over £340K grant from the Big Lottery Fund for work with vulnerable women in Coventry

Kairos Women Working Together are delighted to have recently won a grant of £342,551 from the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) to continue our valuable work with vulnerable women in Hillfields, Coventry.

Kairos WWT aims to support, empower and give a voice to women caught up in/at risk of prostitution, and those aspiring to leave it. We offer women-only safe spaces, a listening ear and advocacy, a wide range of development opportunities and practical support, and support family contact in a positive environment. We do this through our 4 core services: street outreach and evening drop-ins, floating support, a weekly daytime group, and one-to-one befriending.

We believe in the value and dignity of all women, and are passionate about reaching out to a group of women who are often marginalized and vulnerable, with histories including childhood and domestic abuse, grooming for sex work, substance abuse, and homelessness.

The grant will fund our project over the coming three years, starting on 5th September. It will allow us to expand our services to reach more women and better represent their needs.

Janet Ward, Chair of the Trustees, said: “We are thrilled to receive this major award from the Big Lottery Fund. These are momentous times for Kairos and the women we support. We are very grateful to the BLF. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them, and all our other supporters and volunteers who have believed in the work of Kairos and have made this possible.

“This comes at a time when funding in the charity sector is particularly difficult so it is especially welcome. It safeguards our services for another 3 years.”

Lucia Gattuso, Project Manager, said “We are so pleased. Thanks to the Big Lottery we know that we can continue, improve and expand our services for another 3 years. This is a fantastic opportunity and we cannot thank the Big Lottery enough.”

Kairos WWT act up for International Women’s Week 2011

During the months of January to March, four women joined together to form ‘Women On Top’,  a unique creative drama collaboration between Caste Away Arts and Kairos WWT.

The cast

Together we celebrated the voices of women in Coventry in a lead up to International Women’s week 2011. This exciting project was led by Reena Jaisiah, Creative Director of Caste Away Arts, in a 6 week course designed to explore the key elements in drama in order for these talented women to embark on their very own journey of writing, production and performance.
The project explored experimentation with voice, movement, creating characters through improvisation techniques and devising theatre with mime, culminating in a performance of a stage play written by the group titled ‘Midnight Bluebells Ring Out Loudly’.

Midnight and Bluebell are caught plotting....

Fun packed and learner led, Women on TOP proved to be an empowering experience during which new skills and greater confidence were developed.

Midnight & Bluebell showcase their many talents

'Loudly' gets greedy...

Big thanks go to Reena for her vision and guidance, the audience who came to support us during our Women’s Week performance and to the talented Tiona and Sarah who brought the whole thing to life!

Thank you for your support

Trustees Needed!

Kairos WWT is looking to recruit volunteers to join the Board of Trustees. We would welcome applications in particular from applicants with experience/expertise in finance.

Working as a Trustee will enable you to use your professional skills to support Kairos WWT’s important work, including:

To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law etc.

  • To contribute to the board of trustees’ giving firm strategic direction, setting overall policy, defining goals and evaluating performance.
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration & Financial Stability of organisation
  • In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions.

Trustees are expected to attend monthly meetings (held on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7-9pm in Coventry), and also be available by email in between meetings to discuss the day-to-day workings of the charity, as and when the need arises.

‘Every decision that is made at Trustee level at Kairos WWT has real consequences for the charity and thus there is an important feeling of connection with the charity’s aims and objectives. This, coupled with the opportunity to work with like-minded people who are passionately committed and giving their time freely, means that joining Kairos WWT as a Trustee is also joining a community who are committed to a common cause. The feeling of connection, community and the chance to use professional skills in a volunteering capacity – and thus having the potential to positively affect someone’s life – is very rewarding.’ (Jane Osmond, Trustee and Volunteer)
